Years ago, our ancestors did not spend hundreds of dollars every month to take care of their skin. They didn’t bathe themselves in sunscreen and they didn’t have to get chemical peels or exotic masks to give their skin their healthy glow. Yet, they all had beautifully toned skin that naturally glowed. This is not to say that they didn’t take measures to treat their skin; to the contrary, they had their nightly regimen as most people do today. The difference is that their treatments for their skin were concoctions that they used at home. One of those popular treatments was a common household product, olive oil.
Benefits of Olive Oil Skin Treatments
A well prepared olive oil skin treatment can deliver some amazing benefits to your skin; it keeps it moisturized, provides UV protection for the cells, and helps to regenerate the cells for a younger looking complexion.
The fact is that olive oil is an all natural ingredient that contains a number of different antioxidants that are not easily found in other sources. It contains oleic acid, which gives the skin the soft, supple feeling, and Vitamin E gives the skin its elasticity that keeps us looking young and vibrant. Carotenoids are protective agents that help your DNA and RNA; in essence it is a strong cancer fighting agent that lowers your risk of skin damage and the aging process.
It is clear that olive oil has many beneficial properties that can give us that younger, healthy looking skin that we all hope for. Still, not all olive oils are the same and how do you go about choosing the right one? Here are some tips for making sure that the olive oil you use is going to give your skin what you’re looking for.
Avoid the Grocery Store
Olive oil at your local grocery store is often less than pure. While it may say olive oil on the bottle chances are that it is a blend of a number of different oils to give it the added flavor it needs to bring out the desired results in your meal. When you shop for olive oil make sure that you don’t see words on the label like “blended,” “pure” or “light”. These can be deceiving and are not meant to be applied on the skin.
Look for Cold Pressed
Cold pressed is the oil that results from the very first press of olives. This is the best kind of oil for the skin. It has the highest level of antioxidants you will find of all the different types of olive oils. This is because it has never been heated and no solvents or other additives were used in the processing phase. Once the olives have been heated the natural nutrients and distinctive properties of the oil are destroyed. Because of this, the cold pressed oils are the best.
Virgin or Extra Virgin?
When you are selecting olive oil for cooking, your natural inclination would be to reach for the extra virgin because it has a purer flavor. However, for skin care you want to reach for virgin olive oil instead. Extra-virgin again comes from the first pressing of oil but it has also been refined to enhance the flavor. But virgin olive oil does not go through any extra processing after the first pressing so it maintains a higher acidity level, which is better for your skin.
You also want to look for a dark bottle rather than a clear, see through one. The reason for this is because there will be traces of Chlorophyll, which will oxidize when exposed to light. Once it begins to oxidize the oil will lose much of its healthy properties and will be of no natural benefit to you.
When you are ready to use your olive oil make sure that you use it the proper way. Take a few drops of it into your hands and rub it into your skin in a circular motion. This helps to increase the circulation of the skin cells and opens the pores at the same time. Then, take a warm washcloth to your face to further open the pores to remove any impurities deep inside. Leave it on for 10 minutes or so. Keep reheating the washcloth if it becomes cold. Finally, use the washcloth to wash off any excess oil that may be left behind. You’ll notice that your skin will have that soft, supple feeling that will maintain a healthy glow.
Regular use of olive oil on the skin will make you feel like you’ve turned back the hands of time and you can once again reclaim that youthful look that you thought you’d lost.
